We’re still in an abnormal market for used car valuations, and we’re looking at how the average used car prices for the major brands have been changing.

We’re gonna leave the super detailed granular analysis to the data science teams at the consumer facing brands.

Instead let’s scope the bigger picture at all of the used cars listed on retail franchise dealer websites.

How Used Car Prices are Changing in June 2025

In looking how used car prices changed from April to May this year, we saw the average used car price appreciate on 28 brands month over month only depreciating on 5 brands.

Comparing May 2024 to May 2025 the exact opposite was true. Year over year only 5 brands appreciated.

Comparing used car prices changes from May to June 2025, we saw 24 brands appreciate and 9 depreciate, but the real shocker is how prices changed year over year with 25 brands’ used cars being more expensive this June compared to last June.

Rising Used Car Prices Implications for Dealers

So what? With the exception of a few outliers, notably Tesla and Rivian, just about every used car is more expensive right now than it was last year.

Why? Pick any number of reasons: shortage of 1-3 year old used cars because they just didn’t get made during covid, tariffs,

Here’s the good and the bad. The bad: more expensive cars paired with higher interest rates could sideline more buyers.

The good: if you’ve got an inventory sourcing machine running, or want to, the market is yours for the taking. People will still need cars.
